Making time for Reading
I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in....because that's what life is all about. What is interesting is that where the hole was is probably stronger than before. This is what life is all about. This might just mean that whenever we spot a hole we are given the opportunity to improve! This is trading for sure too. One of the aspects of trading that I've wanted to work on and have finally set aside time for it daily is reading the tape. I know a few things to look for, but mostly I don't think I do. I bet there are patterns there that I'm not seeing, because I'm not going back and learning from the tape. Luckily, I record my screens and post them on Youtube - sorry private channel - so I can go back and watch tape. Finally, I've set aside a time to watch key moments of tape I've recorded each day right after the close and before I go and pick up my kids. I'm hoping to learn more about how stocks move in different VIX (volatility) environments or under different ownership - i.e. maybe there are similarities in stocks that are traded by certain funds. I will look at speed of the tape. How it reacts to different technical levels. Which way it moves after big orders go through - noting what qualifies as a big order for a given stock. I hope to learn more, especially things like identifying algorithmic buying programs and the types of programs that may be in play. Something else to think about is what passive buying looks like versus aggressive buying (and the opposite - selling). Alright. That's what I've been thinking about. Also thinking about what else I want to learn from reading the tape. I kind of feel like I don't even know what I should be looking for sometimes. What questions would you have or want to learn about reading tape? Cheers!
